Yugoslavian Medal for Bravery

A recent additions to our stock of medals, the Yugoslavian Medal for Bravery is amongst the most striking.

We have a number of these and are selling them separately. The one in our picture is fairly typical - they are all clean, intact and undamaged with only light signs of wear/ageing.

Collecting Vintage Cheques

There are many things that people will collect. One of the less obvious choices is that of collecting vintage cheques.

I collect too many things already but I can see the appeal of this. It`s an object that tells a story, a record of a transaction that took place between two parties in the past.

The cheques may be drawn on banks that no longer exist in that form. The account holders may be ( to pick a few random examples from past and present stock ) a historic brewery, a hospital, a firm of valuers or some other organisation. The firm concerned may have had their own cheques designed to highlight their company name.

The particular cheques in our picture are from a US bank, Bloomsburg Banking Company, and date from the nineteeenth century. We have nine of these, with four for sale singly and the remaining five available as a job lot.

Visit our e-bay shop to find out more.

Happy Collecting,

Badges - International Confederation of Free Trade Unions

Vintage badges are always popular with collectors and vintage trade union badges are particularly sought after.

These three relate to the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, a body which existed from 1949 to 2006. This was a group that broke away from the World Federation of Trade Unions in 1949 citing undue Communist influence, and existed independently until 2006 when it became part of the International Trade Union Confederation, which still exists today.

The flag-shaped badge and the larger of the two round ones are of particular interest, being Conference badges (The flag-shaped badge was worn by a delegate at Berlin, 1962 and the round one relates to Brussels, 1959).

To see our stock of vintage badges and other collectables, click on http://stores.ebay.co.uk or visit our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/HoonaloonBooks.  I apologise if these links are not working, I think it`s another `blogger blip` so I`ll see if it can be put right tomorrow.

One for the Exonumists

Exonumists are not badly spelt economists but are in fact collectors of exonumia . Usually that means tokens, though strictly speaking exonumia is a term referring to "numismatic items other than coins or paper money".

I myself dabble in collecting tokens a bit and also buy and sell them as part of our business.

We will feature more of these items in the future but for the meantime here is a picture of some transport tokens issued by the Conestoga Transportation Company ;

`Conestoga` in this instance refers to a town in Pennsylvania.

As far as I can make out, collecting American transportation tokens is not  widespread amongst UK exonumists, certainly nowhere near as popular as, say, Co-op tokens, market tokens and the like. Still, they are do have a certain appeal.

For some reason Blogger isn`t letting me provided a link to our e-bay shop for you to click on. However, our EBay shop can be found at http://stores.ebay.co.uk and our Facebook page is at https://www.facebook.com .

Simon Drew - Still Warthogs Run Deep - Signed Copy - ACC - 1997 Reprint

Here at Hoonaloon we are well-versed in bookishness, and partial to a bit of quirkiness to boot.

Which brings me nicely to this rather likeable copy of Simon Drews` Still Warthogs Run Deep, signed by the author in his trademark green ink.

The cover image of snorkelling warthogs is worth the price by itself !

Uncirculated Banknotes

Collecting Uncirculated (UNC) banknotes is an ideal hobby for anyone short of funds or storage space, an the notes themselves are often very attractive.

Often the most attractive notes come from the poorest countries, probably because sales of UNC notes are a useful source of much-needed revenue for them.

The notes in our picture are Trinidad and Tobago $1 notes, dated 2006. They are especially interesting as they feature addition features not seen in some earlier versions of this note, which were introduced to make it more difficult to deter counterfeiters.
