Collecting Vintage Cheques

There are many things that people will collect. One of the less obvious choices is that of collecting vintage cheques.

I collect too many things already but I can see the appeal of this. It`s an object that tells a story, a record of a transaction that took place between two parties in the past.

The cheques may be drawn on banks that no longer exist in that form. The account holders may be ( to pick a few random examples from past and present stock ) a historic brewery, a hospital, a firm of valuers or some other organisation. The firm concerned may have had their own cheques designed to highlight their company name.

The particular cheques in our picture are from a US bank, Bloomsburg Banking Company, and date from the nineteeenth century. We have nine of these, with four for sale singly and the remaining five available as a job lot.

Visit our e-bay shop to find out more.

Badges - International Confederation of Free Trade Unions

Vintage badges are always popular with collectors and vintage trade union badges are particularly sought after.

These three relate to the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, a body which existed from 1949 to 2006. This was a group that broke away from the World Federation of Trade Unions in 1949 citing undue Communist influence, and existed independently until 2006 when it became part of the International Trade Union Confederation, which still exists today.

The flag-shaped badge and the larger of the two round ones are of particular interest, being Conference badges (The flag-shaped badge was worn by a delegate at Berlin, 1962 and the round one relates to Brussels, 1959).

To see our stock of vintage badges and other collectables, click on http://stores.ebay.co.uk or visit our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/HoonaloonBooks.  I apologise if these links are not working, I think it`s another `blogger blip` so I`ll see if it can be put right tomorrow.

One for the Exonumists

Exonumists are not badly spelt economists but are in fact collectors of exonumia . Usually that means tokens, though strictly speaking exonumia is a term referring to "numismatic items other than coins or paper money".

I myself dabble in collecting tokens a bit and also buy and sell them as part of our business.

We will feature more of these items in the future but for the meantime here is a picture of some transport tokens issued by the Conestoga Transportation Company ;

`Conestoga` in this instance refers to a town in Pennsylvania.

As far as I can make out, collecting American transportation tokens is not  widespread amongst UK exonumists, certainly nowhere near as popular as, say, Co-op tokens, market tokens and the like. Still, they are do have a certain appeal.

For some reason Blogger isn`t letting me provided a link to our e-bay shop for you to click on. However, our EBay shop can be found at http://stores.ebay.co.uk and our Facebook page is at https://www.facebook.com .

Simon Drew - Still Warthogs Run Deep - Signed Copy - ACC - 1997 Reprint

Here at Hoonaloon we are well-versed in bookishness, and partial to a bit of quirkiness to boot.

Which brings me nicely to this rather likeable copy of Simon Drews` Still Warthogs Run Deep, signed by the author in his trademark green ink.

The cover image of snorkelling warthogs is worth the price by itself !

Uncirculated Banknotes

Collecting Uncirculated (UNC) banknotes is an ideal hobby for anyone short of funds or storage space, an the notes themselves are often very attractive.

Often the most attractive notes come from the poorest countries, probably because sales of UNC notes are a useful source of much-needed revenue for them.

The notes in our picture are Trinidad and Tobago $1 notes, dated 2006. They are especially interesting as they feature addition features not seen in some earlier versions of this note, which were introduced to make it more difficult to deter counterfeiters.

To see our full stock of UNC notes, click on http://stores.ebay.co.uk/hoonalooncollectables.

Hoonaloon News 8 June 2015 - More Banknotes and another Happy Customer

It`s always a good feeling when a customer gets in touch to express their appreciation, so we were glad to hear from Andy J, who had recently purchased some uncirculated banknotes for his collection.

Andy contacted us "to say how very very very very pleased I am with all the purchased notes. Very crisp, clean notes, efficient and excellent service. ".

Contacted to ask if he minded being quoted he responded "I have no objection to you using me as a quote,  I was only telling the truth.".

Thanks to Andy for his generous comments and for his continued support.

That brings me to some banknotes we have recently added to our listings, a selection of which are  pictured here ;

In truth, uncirculated banknotes have been selling well recently, and this little top-up order of around 24 notes will be followed by further acquisitions soon so we can continue to provide collectors with the range of choice they want.

As always, visit us at http://stores.ebay.co.uk/hoonalooncollectables   to see what else we have to offer.

Hoonaloon New 16 May 2015 - Egyptian First Day Covers

At any given time you can always find a supply of Egyptian banknotes and First Day Covers among our listings.

Recently we were lucky enough to acquire a job lot of Egyptian FDCs dating from the period 1958 - 1966 to add to our existing stock, which tend to be mostly modern. Putting them all online
is time-consuming but we are making good progress.

To me personally, Egypt has produced some of the most interesting and attractive covers you could hope to find. Certainly their appeal is not just to Egyptophile philatelists but also to those who simply appreciate the designs.

Hoonaloon News 28 April 2015 - Uncirculated Banknotes - A Cheap and Cheerful Hobby

Collecting uncirculated banknotes has become a popular hobby in recent times, no doubt due to the affordability and attractiveness of many of the notes on offer.

Budding collectors are presented with an almost mind-boggling level of choice often for a very limited outlay.

I myself began a collection a while ago and it seemed natural as our business began to diversify to begin to deal in them myself.

Here are a few recent additions to our stock ;

Banknotes (from top) ; Bangladesh 1 Taka 1982, Russia 1 Rouble 1991, Turkmenistan 5 Manat 1993, Vietnam 100 Dong 1991 .

These and others from our stock can be founded by clicking here ;

Hoonaloon ! 14 April 2015

Each week, we`re planning to highlight one item from our stock of badges, books, First Day Covers and Banknotes.

This week we have selected this American badge from a branch of Lions Clubs International ;

It relates to a particular Lions Club branch in Chicago, which seems to have a strongly  Hispanic American membership.

The Branch is identified on the badge (Chicago District 1A), as is the year (1980). Around the edge of the badge are a variety of phrases representing different aspects of HIspanic American culture ( Pan American / Azteca / Jose Marti / Borinquen etc).

The badge is clean, intact and undamaged with only light wear.

Along with a selection of other items from our stock, this badge can be found at ;

Hoonaloon News - 16 March 2015

Following a long silence, we`re now able to bring you an update on our doings and dealings.

There have been a number of changes in the last six months.

The major one is that we are no longer a business that deals only in books. After a few false starts we have re-invented ourselves as Hoonaloon Collectables, dealers in books, badges, banknotes, tokens, first day covers and related items.

Following on from that we no longer trade on book trade sites such as ABE, Antiqbook and  Mare Libri. The reason is the obvious one,  that such sites are really geared up for the needs of sellers of books and related materials and not for those of us who need to list a variety of types of items.

We can be found here ; http://stores.ebay.co.uk/hoonalooncollectables

Without more ado, here are a few of the items we are currently offering for sale on E-Bay ;

First up is this attractive Souvenir Sheet (also known as a miniature sheet) from India commemorating Rath Yatra Puri, a Hindu festival. We are not a specialist stamp dealer but do stock a range of First Day Covers and Souvenir Sheets from various parts of the world. Our intention with these is to provide a range of inexpensive items aimed primarily at those just starting a new collection. Most are attractive and many have historical interest in one way or another.

We also stock a range of badges, both military and non-military. One of the more interesting is the badge pictured above, which commemorates STS-44, a Space Shuttle Flight which took place in 1991.

 We have a few other badges with a space travel theme, and many originating with clubs and associations, whether that be Bowls Clubs, Trade Unions, Lions Clubs or others too numerous to mention.

Given our background in the book trade it would be surprising if we didn`t have a range of book available. Our current stock includes a number of  signed books, proof copies and titles relating to the history of the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire area.

A few of these are pictured below ;

John N Merrill - Sir Richard Arkwright of Cromford

Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni - The Conch Bearer (proof copy)

                                                   John Winter - Legacy (signed copy)

All of these can be found in our online emporium by using this link ; http://stores.ebay.co.uk/hoonalooncollectables .

That`s all for now,
